Tips & Best Practices

1

Square (1:1) and portrait (4:5) images get the most engagement in the Facebook feed because they take up more screen space than landscape.

2

Cover photos display differently on mobile and desktop. Keep important text and logos in the center 560x315px safe area.

3

Facebook compresses uploaded images aggressively. Export JPGs at 95% quality or use PNG for text-heavy images.

4

For shared links, the 1200x630 landscape image is pulled automatically from the page's og:image meta tag.

5

Reels should be 1080x1920 (9:16). Facebook gives Reels significantly more organic reach than standard video posts in 2026.

6

Profile pictures are cropped to a circle. Place key elements in the center and avoid text near the edges.

Feed Post Dimensions and Best Practices

Facebook supports three main aspect ratios for feed posts: landscape (1.91:1), square (1:1), and portrait (4:5). Of these, square and portrait consistently outperform landscape in engagement because they occupy more screen real estate in the mobile feed. For images, upload at the highest resolution you can — Facebook will compress them regardless, but starting with a high-quality source means less visible degradation. The minimum width for feed images is 600px, but anything below 1080px will look noticeably soft on modern phone screens. For shared link posts, Facebook automatically pulls the og:image from the URL you're sharing. The ideal size for link preview images is 1200x630 pixels (1.91:1). If the image is too small or missing, Facebook may display a small thumbnail instead of a large preview, which dramatically reduces click-through rates.

Cover Photo Safe Zones

Facebook cover photos are one of the trickiest dimensions to get right because they display differently on desktop and mobile. On desktop, the cover displays at 820x312. On mobile, it's cropped to approximately 640x360. The practical implication: design your cover at the full recommended resolution (851x315 for personal profiles, 1200x674 for Pages), but keep all critical elements — text, logos, CTAs — within the center safe zone. Avoid placing important content in the outer 130px on either side or the top/bottom 30px. For business Pages, Facebook now recommends 16:9 (1200x674) cover images, which display better on mobile. Upload as PNG if your cover includes text; JPG for photographic covers.

Facebook Reels and Stories Specs

Facebook Reels and Stories both use the 9:16 vertical format at 1080x1920 pixels. This is the same dimension used by Instagram Stories/Reels and TikTok, so you can repurpose content across platforms without resizing. For Reels: videos can be 3–90 seconds long, with 30–60 seconds being the sweet spot for engagement. Use MP4 or MOV format, H.264 codec, AAC audio. Maximum file size is 4 GB, but keeping files under 500 MB ensures faster processing. For Stories: images display for 5 seconds, videos up to 60 seconds. Leave the top 250px and bottom 250px free of critical content — Facebook overlays your profile picture, name, and Story controls in these areas. Facebook is heavily promoting Reels in 2026, giving them significantly more organic reach than standard posts. If you're choosing between a regular video post and a Reel, go with the Reel.

Video Upload Specifications

Facebook supports a wide range of video formats, but the recommended specs for best quality are: Format: MP4 or MOV container Codec: H.264 video, AAC audio Resolution: 1080p minimum (1920x1080 for landscape, 1080x1920 for vertical) Frame rate: 30fps (60fps supported but offers minimal benefit for social content) Bitrate: 4,000–6,000 kbps for 1080p Maximum file size: 4 GB Maximum duration: 240 minutes For feed videos, both landscape (16:9) and vertical (9:16) work, but vertical videos autoplay larger in the mobile feed. Square (1:1) videos are also a good option and display well on both mobile and desktop. Facebook auto-generates captions for videos, but uploading your own SRT subtitle file gives you better control over accuracy and timing. Videos with captions get 12% more engagement on average since most Facebook users scroll with sound off.
